First Year – Cardboard Chair project

This is an entirely cardboard chair design I made as a project for my first year engineering course. It can be oriented with two heights to accommodate young students of different ages, and all cardboard pieces are flat. We presented videos showcasing our chair designs to the rest of the undergraduate engineers and I was lucky to have my design ranked in the top three projects in UBC’s first year engineering cohort:

We built and showcased scale models due to our remote locations in COVID, but I’d be curious to build a full-size one and see how much its strength suffers. This small model was able to easily handle 75lbs of weight, but actually getting more weight on at home became difficult to do so I’m not sure what it’s yield strength really is…
